Are we still friends after the sugar topic?

I thought I would write a bit more about me..I'm very good at talking lol..just ask my friends..I better watch what I say as I may get loads of comments for this one hee hee..

Well by now if you have been reading my posts you will know I'm in the older bracket Mummies group..I always wanted to have children from a very young age, I just wanted to choose the right guy to have them with..

I've definitely kissed a few frogs in my time..

I might save for another time the story "love" story of how Dan and I met..

I will skip that part to up to our wedding day..on our wedding day we found out our friends were taking bets to guess how long until we would have kids..the shortest bet was of course 9 months, however the longest was only 2.5 years from our wedding day..Dan does not possess the honeymoon hitman title it goes to our dear friend Kerin whom got his beautiful wife Sarah pregnant on day 2 of their honeymoon..good job Kerin..I'm sure he won't mind me telling you that..isn't that the ultimate ego boost for a guy to get his wife up the duff on their honeymoon???

Back to the story Kath..I can go off on a tangent sometimes lol, Dan is always correcting me on this one..

So Dan and I told our friends before the wedding day that we would be waiting at least 5 years to have kids..Zach was born in our 8th year of marriage..

Dan is definitely my prince..I knew from the 1st kiss that he was amazing and on day 6 of dating I knew he was the "one" you know the one everyone talks about...I think that people can put alot of expectation on the thought of the "one" or "soul mate" I believe LOVE is a choice and not just a feeling..I made a commitment to him in front of family, friends and God to love him forever..I can tell you that when I was dating Dan I literally could of melted into the carpet when he entered the room, I couldn't sleep or eat at times from the "love" butterflies in my belly..he is still the love of my life but I do not melt into the carpet when he enters a room nor do I miss a meal on accounts of love..sleep is another topic cause I have a child now and I may not ever ever sleep the same again lol..

So you get the drift..I'm a very happily married 38 year old who has her own toy boy yep..Dan is 5 years 3/4 months exactly younger than me.. : ) whilst I was writing this Dan made me a yummy salmon salad.. : )

Dan will get lots of blog time as most of the stories I will write will include him..so I will just let you know one last thing that is soo amazing about him before I go and play with Zach who is currently eating his lunch..

God definitely knew not just what I wanted in a man but what I needed to..and he promised me that my prince was going to be the father of my children..Dan is the best Dadda ever..he is a completely hands on Dad who will do anything that needs to be done..

One last thing I promise..Dan had to take a job last October where he lives away from us 23 days a month : ( he is only home 3.5 days a fortnight so time with us is even more precious..

Don't hate me for this one...my opinion about sugar..

Ok so here comes the cold hard truth, my opinion about SUGAR.. : )

I'm not a big fan of sugar..natural sugar from fruit that is picked off the tree etc I give the BIG thumbs up..fruit put into a roll up, muslie bar, yogurt, etc I give the thumbs down..

I have seen the damage of sugar inside thE mouth many many times..I've cried inside whilst assisting a Dentist remove every baby tooth (deciduous teeth) in a 3 year olds mouth because every single one was rotten (heavily decayed)..

I will be honest and say that some of these Mummies I've wanted to sit them down and give them a good lecture..you may be thinking that this only occurs in the poor social economic areas..your wrong this happens everywhere and some of the kids who's teeth were rotting out of their heads came from wealthy families..in some cases the parents were Doctors, Lawyers etc etc..you get the point..

Despite the education out there about sugar, everyone is fighting a losing battle when so many food products have what I feel unneccessary amounts of sugar in them and in some cases I have no idea why it even needs it in there at all..

Coke and V drinks are on the top of my list as a huge BIG no for kids.. : (

We are a small country in comparison to America yet we have well and truly caught up to them with obesity and Type 2 Diabetes..

Everyone is to busy to eat well so to save time people buy quick and easy which can be detrimental to their health..

Why do we not care as much??? especially for our kids..convenience seems to win everytime..

I could write pages on this topic..pages of foods that are loaded with sugar but I won't why? cause you don't seriously want to read pages and pages, just as much as I'm not so keen to write it..common sense people everyone has it + the 2 eyes we have been blessed with to read what is in the food we buy..

I'm a realist though and I do believe in "moderation" and I don't think you can completely cut sugar out of your diet "forever" but you can monitor how much you eat..

I also do not like pre packaged juices, ribena or cordial to be given to kids everyday..I won't get started about these..dam it..I couldn't help myself but again I could of got pages and pages on this subject..I will give you the basic info and if you want to further research a product, topic I've written about go for it..knowledge is power...

Definitely express juice at home from a juicer to drink yourself and for the kids (BIG thumbs up)

Is Reconstituted Fruit Juice Nutritious?

Unsurprisingly, reconstituted fruit juices do not offer the high nutritional qualities of their freshly squeezed counterparts. Enzymes required for adequate food metabolism and the immune system are destroyed through the process of heating and reconstitution. Vitamin C levels are also depleted significantly, but artificially added back by most manufacturers at a later date.

Reconstituted fruit juice labels may also be misleading, as there is no current Australian regulation to enforce juice companies' list where the concentrate itself originates. Domestic harvests can great vary season to season in Australia, and shortfalls of juice concentrate used to in the reconstituted juices may be imported from offshore. This is especially concerning when there is possibility the concentrate comes from countries such as China, where there are no strict health codes of practice in place. It is also worth checking the labels to ensure the reconstituted juice hasn't been produced from less expensive juices such as apple or grape, which offer a significantly less nutritional value..

How to Choose Nutritious Juice

When choosing a juice, it is always best to stick the organic variety. They will only contain natural preservatives such as citric acid, and offer a higher concentration of vitamins, minerals and phytonutrients. Organic juices are also free of cancer-causing pesticides often used to produce genetically modified crops, and contain no added sugar, colours or additives.

I will use 1 example of food..this product of food is consumed by millions everyday YOGURT..

This applies to both adults and kids but especially kids..

Yogurt shouldn't be loaded with sugar but it is..kids yogurts are the worst..

Below is just a small piece of info that I researched and this article was written by a registered Dietition..like any topic I write I could give you so much info your head like mine might explode..I don't think it's always necessary to get to many opinions and confirmations..when you know it own it and share it..I also pride myself on the motto when you know better you do better..I stand behind my word..I'm not just preaching at you..I do what I say, I'm not exempt..I'm not sitting up on my pedestal looking down and judging you so I hope that is not conveyed?

So before you read the article below I just want you to know that this is my opinion, I'm not a Dietition, Doctor or Nutritionist..I'm a Mummy and also a woman who tries to keep a low sugar diet..my 17 month old has only ever had sugar from apples, pears, rice, oat and almond milk..and of course the yogurt below..

There is only 2 can you believe 2 yogurts I recommend to eat for you and your little ones..

The 1st one is the only yogurt my son Zach has ever known..

BIO DYNAMIC ORGANIC WHOLE MILK YOGURT (Jalna)

This yogurt has no gelatine, starches or food acids added..
It is Australian made and owned
Free of cane sugar
Free of stabilizers
No use of pesticides, herbicides and growth hormones
It is loaded with Bifdobacterium and Lactobacillus 600,000,000 probiotic count per serve...
It has 41g of natural milk sugar for a 1kg tub..

Zach loves it..

It doesn't have Dora or the Wiggles on the label and is not in an easy 1 serve size tub..it only cost between $6 and $7 Aud..compare the price you pay for packs of 4 tubs..not to forget a mention of the saving of packaging buying the big tub..

The 2nd yogurt I recommend is good old plain greek yogurt..
This is the article written by a registered Dietition

Criteria
There are five important factors in choosing yogurt: sugar content, added ingredients, calcium, live and active cultures and taste (of course).

Sugar: Because milk already contains natural sugar in the form of lactose, it can be difficult to tell how much added sugar is in the product. The best thing to do is to compare the sugars in the plain version (if it’s available) to the flavored one. So if the flavored product has 26g of sugar and the plain has 13g the product would contain 13g of added sugar.
In general, plain yogurt and milk has about 12g of sugar per 8 ounces. So that means 4 ounces has about 6g and 6 ounces has about 9g. After examining a number of products the following cut offs for total sugars seem reasonable. 8oz: 26g or less, 6oz: 20g or less and 4oz: 13g or less.
Tip: Flavors like vanilla tend to have less sugar than fruity flavors and fat-free yogurt usually has more sugar than low fat or whole.

Added ingredients: Watch out for artificial colors, preservatives and filler ingredients that make for less yogurt in the cup. Look for yogurts without artificial sweeteners and high fructose corn syrup. Just plain old sugar will do.

Live & Active Cultures: You want to make sure that the yogurt you choose contains “live & active cultures,” which are also called probiotics. If you see the Live & Active Culture seal from the Yogurt Association, you know the product contains adequate amounts.

The large intestine needs healthy, “good” bacteria to thrive and help fight disease. These live bacteria also help breakdown lactose so people with lactose intolerance may be able to enjoy yogurt.
Calcium: The smaller the serving size, the less calcium the yogurt will contain. Shoot for at least 15% Calcium for 4 oz (150mg), 20% for 6 oz (200mg) and 30% for 8 oz (300mg).
Fat and organic: Kids under two need full fat dairy products for optimal growth and brain development so choose whole yogurt for them. People over two can go with low fat or fat-free yogurt (3g of fat or less).

I didn’t include organic in the criteria. Generally, I recommend full fat yogurt be organic but leave it optional for lower fat varieties. For more details see Is Organic Milk Worth the Price?

Yogurts that fit the bill

1. Plain Yogurt (any brand): You don’t need me to tell you that plain is the healthiest choice for yogurt. I highly recommend parents start their babies on plain whole organic yogurt instead of the flavored kind and keep them on it.

I made the mistake of offering my daughter sweetened yogurt and she looked at me like I had two heads when I tried to give her plain again.

At the end of the day it's all about choice...I'm choosing to not worship the sugar God..hee hee..

Dandruff..

My hubby Dan has always had terrible dandruff over the years..

He has used very cheap "anti" dandruff shampoo's and conditioner's to the most expensive ones you can buy..

Let me tell you using cheap "anti" dandruff shampoo's are the worst..the more expensive ones stop it for a while but it always comes back..

Using cheap hair products also is a no no for dandruff sufferers..in this case cheaper isn't better or the same..

Most male hairdressers, salons, or barbers will recommend products they use, Dan has tried many of these to with no long term resolve..

We have been married 10 years this June and he has always had dandruff..

He had his haircut last week in our local shopping centre and the guy that cut his hair recommended "American Crew" products especially designed for men..I'm sure American Crew has great product however a 200ml bottle of shampoo was approx $25..very expensive for us and most working class families, especially for a product you don't know will work..

Another chat with the amazing wise owl Raymond and guess what he said???

Yep you guessed it to use Zach's shampoo mixed with coconut oil..

I used Gaia's organic shampoo for Zach..

Raymond recommended to not use an organic shampoo for Dan's hair so I bought him Johnson and Johnson conditioning shampoo 500mls about $8 combined with 500mls of coconut oil the total cost for 1 Litre approx $15..

And finally a product that works yay...

It's not completely natural, but it's a better alternative to some products he has used..I'm sure if I researched it I could probably find a more natural way..that isn't always my goal..I'm happy with the combination above..

Cradle Cap...

A natural way to fix cradle cap..

Rub almond oil or olive oil onto the scalp each day until the cradle cap goes..

Zach had cradle cap a couple of times and even though both oils work they left his hair greasy for a couple of days..

I asked my hairdresser Raymond for some tips and he advised me to put natural coconut oil into his shampoo..I use 50% shampoo and 50% coconut oil..it smells delicious, keeps cradle cap at bay, is non greasy and best of all it leaves his hair so shiny...

Any baby shampoo is ok..

I'm not a trained professional..

To start off my blog officially I thought I would let you know about me...firstly let me tell you I'm not a writer and had terrible marks in english all those years ago at school..I don't always start a new paragraph when I should or use comma's, quotations marks, full stops, question marks, inverted comma's etc at the right times..I will do my best but the only important thing is no matter how I write it, all that is relevant is can you read it and understand it..my spelling isn't the greatest either..

I'm not on here to be anything but my real self and I will always show you that..

A very wise woman, a friend of mine offered me some very good advise tonight..I want you all to know I'm not a trained practitioner of any description..during my working career I was a Dental Assistant a job I not only loved enjoyed too for over 12 years..I also did some nannying, had a small babysitting service, cleaned houses and worked in a book shop in the years before becoming Mumma to Zachary known as Zach born November 2010 8 days before my 37 birthday...

My life story is far to looong to put into 1 blog so I won't even try hee hee..

The reason for this blog is to just share with you the knowledge I've learned over the years..I'm still learning and love hearing other peoples ideas and stories of their life's journey..

When I tell you a bit about my health history you will understand why I'm passionate about living life well..

I was a sickly child, from my earliest memory I suffered tonsilitis on a regular basis..I still have my tonsills despite the grief they gave me..I consumed alot of Antibiotics as a child and don't recall ever being given any other alternatives..

My mother was not the greatest cook, meat and 3 vege every night except for a roast at the end of the week..everything was cooked in "dripping" and boiled till there was no life left in the veges we consumed..it was all she knew and I think as I never asked her she wasn't to fond of cooking..it certainly seemed that way..the first time I had a real salad with the works in it was when I made it myself..

When I was 16 I got Glandular Fever and got very sick..it was the start of a roller coaster ride for me that would last till I was 25..shortly after Glandular Fever I got diagnosed with stage 4 Endometriosis then Chronic Fatigue Syndrome (CFS) and irritable bowel syndrome I was told by 5 specialists I would never have a baby after a laporoscopy at 18 and I should just save myself the grief by having a hysterectomy asap..I was not impressed with that news as you can imagine at such a tender young age..I decided to keep my uterus : ) a decision I've never regretted..

I've seen more Doctors over the years than I could count..one stood out amongst them and has remained my Doctor for a long time..I don't particulary trust them and don't feel that they offer you a really good service...they are quick to diagnose a problem but not willing to solve the problem properly..

I spent alot of money in those early days on medications for the Endometriosis and CFS..my immune system couldn't cope and I was susceptible to many virus's for a long time..

I didn't work at all for 4 years in my early 20's..I couldn't keep a job due to such poor health and my only source of income was sickness benefits from the government..I also lived in government housing for 18 months..it was a hard time for me..

I took alot of pharmaceuticals with no resolve..I couldn't even fight the common cold and it often resulted in pneumonia..

At 23 I was diagnosed Celiac (wheat and gluten allergic) and I also have an intolerance to dairy, cannot eat pork or processed meats..

As a last effort to get my life back on track I left the Sunshine Coast and moved to Sydney when I was 25, the best decision I had made to date at that time..it was in Sydney I would come across Robert Fraser (Naturapath) through a friend who's Dad was told he would lose his leg to Gout..he never lost his leg due to a visit to see Robert that would forever change his life and mine..I found out Robert lived and worked in Robina on the Gold Coast less than 2 hours drive from where I was living on the Sunshine Coast for 12 years, now I was 12 hours drive away in Sydney..

At the 1st chance I could I flew to the Gold Coast to see Robert and since that moment he has been a huge part of my life...leaving his office that day 13 years ago was the start of my new life..

One by one Robert helped me stop taking pharmaceuticals and introduced me to chinese medicine and many other natural therapies followed..

I could go on and on with story after story of how I over came sickness through natural medicine..I went from no job to working full time in a very short period of time...

Through this blog I will share stories and testimonies of the amazing natural therapy's I have used and offer advice all of this optional for you to do..

My life has changed dramatically from those days of nothing but ill health..I have helped friends over the years try natural medicine remedies all very pleased with the result..

Hopefully at times some of those whom I have helped can comment and share how it helped them so you can hear their story..

So to cover myself I'm letting you know that any of the advice I give has come from a Practitioner that I have seen and written down notes in my journal over the years..I can recommend many services you can use and Practitioners you can see..

Any of the products I recommend are ones I use personally..a product similiar is not always the same..if I give advice to use a product it's because it was advised by a Practitioner I've seen to use that product..if you buy a similiar product or product I advise but with no resolove I can't be held responsible..if unsure you should do your own research and see a health professional of your choosing..

I believe in conventional medicine, I just don't believe it's the only way..

Western Drugs: Acetaminophen (such as Tylenol) or ibuprofen (such as Advil or Motrin) are most often used to reduce childhood fever. Avoid giving aspirin to a child who has a viral illness because the use of aspirin in such cases has been associated with the development of Reye Syndrome, which can lead to liver failure. A sponge or towel soaked in lukewarm water may help comfort the child until the fever drops. Ice, cold water, alcohol rubs, cold baths, and fans should be avoided.(see below) Encourage your child to drink clear fluids such as water with ice chips, children's electrolyte solutions, flat sodas like ginger ale (stir room-temperature soda until the fizz disappears), or clear broth. (chicken soup - the clear broth) Fluids decrease the risk of dehydration.
We suggest not to use any drug. Unless of course absolutely necessary. Please make an informed choice. The following are the listed warnings in the very small print that goes along with each bottle.

Ibuprofen is a nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drug (NSAID), which relieves pain and swelling (inflammation). It is used to treat headaches, muscle aches, backaches, dental pain, menstrual cramps, arthritis, or athletic injuries. This medication is also used to reduce fever and to relieve minor aches and pain due to the common cold or flu. We think you should use ZEEL instead. (See below)

This drug may infrequently cause serious (rarely fatal) bleeding from the stomach or intestines. Also, related drugs rarely have caused blood clots to form, resulting in heart attacks and strokes.
If you notice any of the following rare but very serious side effects, stop taking ibuprofen and seek immediate medical attention: black stools, persistent stomach/abdominal pain, vomit that looks like coffee grounds, chest pain, weakness on one side of the body, sudden vision changes, slurred speech.

Hello

Hello Yummy Mummy's,

This is my blog page where I will pour out my heart telling you all the natural ways I parent and live my life..I'm a square peg that has never fit into the round hole..I question everything and believe western medicine doesn't have all the answers..you can ask me anything and I will try and answer it the best I know how..I'm not "qualified" I'm a 38 year old Mummy just trying to do things that best serves my child..
